How Do You Get Asphalt Off a Car?

Sometimes you might notice a hard black substance stuck to the side of your car, usually near the wheel well. While it might look like asphalt, it’s actually bitumen or tar. This material is used during asphalt sealcoating in Palm Harbor FL and other areas. So, if your driveway, parking lot, or road was recently sealed by an asphalt contractor in Palm Harbor FL, that could be how tar ended up on your car.

You’ll want to remove it as soon as possible, as tar can damage your vehicle’s paint and finish. Fortunately, there are several easy ways to remove tar using common products you can find at a grocery store or auto supply shop.

Ways to remove tar from your car

Bug and tar removal spray
Spray the remover onto a microfiber towel or directly on the tar spot. Then gently rub the area in a circular motion until the tar breaks down and comes off. You might need to reapply the spray or rewet your towel a few times for stubborn spots. After the tar is gone, wash the area thoroughly with car wash soap and a sponge to remove any residue.

WD-40 or Goo Gone
Apply the product to a microfiber towel or directly to the tar. Let it sit for 10 to 30 minutes to soften the material. Then use a clean towel to wipe the area. Be sure to wash the surface afterward—especially if you used WD-40—since leftover residue can harm your car’s paint.

Peanut butter
It might sound strange, but peanut butter can be surprisingly effective for removing tar. The oils help break down the sticky residue. Dab some onto a microfiber towel and apply it to the tar spot. Let it sit for about 30 minutes, then wipe it off with another clean towel. Repeat if needed for more stubborn spots.

What should I do after the tar is removed?

No matter which method you use, it’s a good idea to wash and wax your car afterward. This helps protect your paint and restore your car’s shine.
